Location: Tribeca, Manhattan, NY
Service: Specialty Area Rug Stain Removal & Fringe Whitening
Project Overview
We were contacted by a client in Tribeca who had spilled a full cup of black coffee on a high-end, hand-knotted wool rug. Because the rug featured a light cream field, the dark tannins in the coffee had set quickly, creating a large, unsightly brown mark.
Conventional home cleaning products often fail on coffee stains and can damage delicate wool fibers. Our task was to extract the organic matter and neutralize the stain without causing “color bleed” in the rug’s intricate patterns.
The Process
Dry Soil Removal: Before wetting the stain, we used a high-frequency vibration process to remove all loose dust and grit from the base of the rug.
Tannin Neutralization: We applied a specialized acidic spotting agent designed specifically to break down coffee tannins while protecting the wool’s natural pH.
Sub-Surface Extraction: Using a “cool-water” extraction method, we pulled the liquid out from both the face fibers and the rug backing to prevent the stain from “wicking” back up as it dried.
Fringe Detailing: To finish, we detailed the cotton fringes, ensuring the entire piece looked uniform and bright.
